Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna wants an audit to be conducted on all places of worship to establish the doctrine they preach to their faithful.
According to Senator Sifuna, religious entities have been greatly harmed by a variety of factors that have encouraged the formation of unscrupulous churches.
Speaking on Citizen TV’s Daybreak show on Thursday, Sifuna said that the only way to curb the crooked religions manipulating Kenyans into engaging in disgraceful practices is to interrogate them and take appropriate actions.
“Some of the things we see don’t make sense to us. There are standards of leadership in the church that have been set in the book of Timothy,” said Sifuna.
He added: “You cannot be a person who loves money so if the entire service you are running a till number then it is a red flag.”
“We need to audit all religious institutions that are already operating so that we understand what sort of religious doctrine is being preached in some of those places.”
Senator Sifuna further stated that some of the religious centres in the nation enjoy immunity from being flagged since they are affiliated with top government individuals.
This, he said, should also be avoided because the unholy alliances put members of the public in danger.
“There is a very toxic relationship between religious institutions and government authorities and politicians,” he said.
“And we will not be afraid to say that some of these people have been emboldened by the unholy alliance between state power and the church.”
This lies against the backdrop of the Shakahola cult massacre news that has drawn the attention of many after at least 98 people were reported dead.
Pastor Paul Mackenzie Nthenge of the Good News International Church is said to have instructed members to starve themselves in order to “meet Jesus.”
Detectives and pathologists are still searching the Shakahola forest for more shallow graves and any remaining Nthenge followers.
