Seven police officers based in Nakuru County are under investigation by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) over bribery allegations.
The officers are said to have solicited bribes in order to release a motor vehicle detained at the Nakuru Central Police Station.
The officers under the ongoing probe include Chief Inspector Derrick Nyaga, Sergeant Stephen Muinde, Sergeant Jessy Nyamwange, Inspector Christine Orina, Corporal Jane Wanjiru, Corporal Benjamin Kiptoo Ego, and Police Constable Katito.
Investigations are said to have commenced after receiving a complaint from a motorist alleging of being stopped for no reason on accusations of traffic violations.
The complainant claimed police officers manning the roadblock demanded Ksh.5,000 from the driver and when he was unable to provide, the officers arrested the driver together with the vehicle.
Two officers namely Corporal Benjamin Kiptoo Ego alias Jicho Pevu and Sergeant Stephen Muinde escorted the vehicle to Nakuru Central Police Station where it was detained and the driver put in custody.
The driver remained in custody until the following day on 4th May 2023 when he was released after the amount demanded amounting to Ksh.8,000 was paid to Sergeant Jessy Nyamwange, the Officer in charge of discipline at Central Police Station.
The driver claims the officers continued to detain the vehicle as they demanded separate bribe amounts to “pay for the sins of the vehicle” and secure its release from police custody.
The vehicle was later released after the EACC intervention. The suspects have since been summoned and recorded statements with the EACC.
