Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has offered Conjestina Achieng, a former celebrated Kenyan boxer and the first African woman to hold an international title, a job as gym instructor and head of security at the Salama Bling Beach Resort in Kanamai, Kilifi County.
The former boxer was battling drug and substance abuse while in Siaya before Sonko came to her rescue and facilitated her admission to a Mombasa-based rehabilitation center where she underwent treatment and recovery.
Sonko had initially promised her a job as assistant head of security operations and head of all female bouncers at his Club Volume upon recovery.
“She will be the overall assistant head of security and head of all female bouncers at Club Volume Mombasa at night & during peak hours/holidays. She will also serve as the head trainer in all the gyms in our establishments (Salama Bling Beach Resort, Kimeremeta Safari Lodge etc…). As a long term measure, we are intending to open for her a boxing training centre where she will be coaching boxing,” Sonko said then.
However, upon realizing that the environment could possibly tempt her into drugs again, the ex-Nairobi County chief had a change of heart mind and decided to employ her services elsewhere.
“Conje will be the gym instructor and head security at Salama Bling Beach resort, Kanamai. Together with her sister, coach and son, we inspected the hotel that she’ll be working at and they all agreed. She will now be making a living in order to support her family, lakini tumeelewana na wao kwamba Siaya hatarudi tena atakuwa anaenda kusalimie under supervision na kurudi,” Sonko stated on Tuesday.
The former Governor has been magnanimous in ensuring Conjestina stands on her feet for some time now.
Before taking her to the Mombasa rehab facility, he had earlier flown her from Siaya to Nairobi for medical treatment.
Sonko’s appeal to the family and friends of Conjestina is close supervision to avoid any setbacks as she maneuvers through her job activities.
