Toronto Ontario Government Unveils New Statue to Honour Queen Elizabeth

A brand new Queen Elizabeth II statue was unveiled on Tuesday morning by the Ontario government at the Queen’s Park Toronto.

The bronze statue worth $1.5 million is located at the Queen’s Park Toronto next to the visitors entrance of the legislative building.

The statue features the late Queen holding maple leaves to represent the Canadian provinces and territories.

Speaking during the unveiling ceremony, Premier Douglas Robert- Canadian Politician said that the Statue stands as a tribute to the late Queen.

“For seven decades, Queen Elizabeth the Second put service before self. She was a leader, a role model, and a source of comfort and stability during very difficult times,”the premier said.

“The statue will serve as a lasting symbol of our traditions and values, and we hope it educates and inspires visitors to Queen’s Park today and for generations to come,” Premier continued.

However, the statue has brought with itself mixed reactions as it cost taxpayers $1.5million. Some indigenous leaders believe the money would be of better use somewhere else.

The statue was conceived as a privately backed project to be unveiled in 2017, but fundraising efforts fell short so the government allocated money to get the statue installed.

The statue was designated and hand sculpted by noted Canadian sculptor and artist, Ruth Abernethy, and cast by Mississauga art foundry MST Bronze Limited.

It captures Queen Elizabeth II in 1977 on the throne in the Canadian Senate, where she delivered a speech on Canadian Unity.
