Renowned activist and former journalist, Boniface Mwangi, has been handed a two-month jail sentence or the option to pay a fine of Ksh 300,000 in connection to a case involving allegations against Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua.

The court’s decision, which includes an extension of a gag order until January 2024, is a result of Mwangi’s social media posts suggesting that Mutua had been responsible for an alleged bombing of his home in Kinanie.

In an Instagram post, Mwangi acknowledged his conviction for contempt of court, stating,

“I have been found guilty of contempt of court. Sentenced to two months in prison or pay a fine of Ksh 300,000. The gag order was extended to January 2024. I can no longer post who bombed our home. Water is wet, the pope is Catholic, and everyone knows who bombed our home.”

This sentencing follows Mwangi’s prior declaration, made a week ago, in which he expressed his lack of fear regarding potential imprisonment, as Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua had filed a case against him.

On Twitter, Mwangi asserted that he would never apologize for speaking the truth and providing evidence to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Kenya.

Mwangi shared a sentencing notice, which had directed him to appear personally at the Machakos High Court’s Civil Division for his jail sentence.

The notice, dated October 23, 2023, stated that the court proceedings would continue as scheduled, even in his absence, possibly leading to the issuance of a warrant for his arrest and subsequent incarceration.

The case itself dates back to Mwangi’s claims in October 2021, alleging that CS Mutua, during his tenure as Machakos governor, had been involved in a bombing incident at his Kinanie residence.

Mwangi contended that three armed men in a white pickup truck had not only assaulted his employees but had also caused damage to a house under construction, leaving behind evidence of bullets and explosives.

Mwangi attributed the attack to his public support for musician Juliani, who was in a relationship with CS Mutua’s estranged former long-term partner, Lillian Nganga.

Through his social media platforms, Mwangi had shed light on the challenges faced by Lillian Nganga and Juliani after the breakdown of her relationship with CS Mutua, which may have led to the alleged attack.
