The family of a young lady who was killed in an airbnb in Nairobi’s Roysambu constituency has finally spoken, revealing they are devastated at the untimely and tragic death of their beloved daughter, Rita Waeni Muendo.
At just 20 years old, the family in a press release today, said Waeni was a promising university student and was set to embark on her final year at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).
According to the family, Rita left her aunt’s residence in Syokimau to meet a friend on Saturday, January 13, 2024.

However, the family’s world came crashing down on Sunday, January 14, at 5:00 am when her father received a chilling message demanding a ransom of Ksh. 500,000 for her release.
Despite reporting the matter to the police and DCI and initiating investigations, the family received two more messages with ransom demands.
Tragically, the family was unable to gather further details or explore the ransom route before discovering that their daughter had been brutally murdered.
The family, in collaboration with the DCI, positively identified Rita as the victim at Thika Road Mall on Sunday morning. It is believed that the perpetrator not only took her life but also attempted to extort money from the grieving family even after the heinous act.
Waeni was described as an intelligent and caring individual who left a lasting impact on those around her.
During this period of profound grief, the Mutea family requested privacy to mourn Waeni’s loss and focus on treasured memories. They also appealed to the media to come slow on interviews for respect and understanding as they navigate this difficult time. The family expressed gratitude to the DCI for their support and pledged to work closely with them to ensure justice for Waeni.
In their statement, the Mutea family emphasized their hope that the truth will prevail, and those responsible for this senseless act will be held accountable. They extended sincere appreciation for the love and support received, requesting understanding and sensitivity as they mourn the loss of their beloved Waeni.
The family will hold a private funeral service to commemorate Waeni’s life, and further details will be shared in due course.
