In a remarkable turn of events, four fishermen from Kilifi, who went missing in the Indian Ocean in November, have been discovered alive aboard a Chinese fishing vessel.
The Kenya Coast Guard Services (KCGS), in collaboration with the fishermen’s families, had been tirelessly conducting a search and rescue mission since their disappearance.
According to KCGS sources, the Chinese fishing vessel encountered the capsized boat carrying the missing fishermen while fishing in Kenyan waters.
A report stated, “We found four people in a capsized boat, we have them on board but they are still not repatriated until the vessel docks in Sri Lanka.”
Despite the relief of their survival, the families will have to endure an agonizing wait until February, when the Chinese ship is scheduled to return to Sri Lanka.
The four fishermen had been reported missing in early December, more than a week after they departed from Malindi beach on November 30 for a deep-sea fishing trip, originally expected to last a week.
The missing persons report by KCGS had highlighted the mysterious disappearance of the fishermen aboard the Jodari, a white-hulled fishing vessel powered by a 40HP Yamaha engine, into the vast expanse of the ocean.
The search and rescue efforts, led by Sergeant Nyongesa aboard KMA 05, extended to secluded bays near Kichwa Cha Kati, CMM Rasi, and beyond.
