- Hyena attacks in Kiamugumo village, Kirinyaga County, spark fear among residents
- Four women injured while picking tea, urge Kenya Wildlife Service for immediate action
- Residents express dissatisfaction with KWS guidance on avoiding hyena attacks
Residents of Kiamugumo village in Gichugu, Kirinyaga County, are urgently appealing to the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) to capture a hyena responsible for attacking four people on Wednesday.
David Muriithi, representing the concerned residents, expressed their fear as the roaming animal targeted four women picking tea on their farms. Muriithi stated, “We are living in fear of even taking our children to Kiamugumo and Ngariama Primary Schools.”
The victims, Susana Wawira, Marion Wawira, Toronto Macharia, and Sicily Murugi, were attacked and subsequently taken to local private hospitals at Githure shopping centre.
Susan Wawira emphasized, “There is already an electric wire in Mt Kenya forest, and now we are calling on KWS to capture the hyena as it is attacking everybody in the village.”
Detailing her encounter, Marion Wawira shared, “The animal attacked me from behind, and I was helped by a man passing by our tea farm near the road.”
She expressed concerns for the safety of schoolchildren, saying, “We are afraid our children who leave very early in the morning to go to school might fall prey to the wild animals.”
Expressing dissatisfaction with KWS guidance, David Muriithi questioned, “How can you talk with a hyena? Is it a human being? They are joking with hyenas near Mt Kenya forest.” The residents are seeking swift action to ensure the safety of the community from further wildlife encounters.
