Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has emerged as a new player in Governor Kawira Mwangaza’s unanimous impeachment, after he pledged to support her despite Meru MCAs casting votes to send her home.
Kuria on X, pointed a finger at a certain power-hungry leader in Mt. Kenya, alleging that this leader was the mastermind behind the heated impeachment campaign, all in a bid to propel themselves as the region’s kingpin.
This comes after a dramatic showdown in the Meru County Assembly, where the governor’s fate hung in the balance as the County Assembly took center stage and casted votes to oust her from the counties most powerful seat.
This happened on Wednesday, a day that will arguably be etched in the annals of Meru’s political history.
A total of 59 MCAs, all In their designated seats, out of the 69-strong assembly, cast their votes in a resounding chorus of disapproval.
With a wave of raised hands, they sent shockwaves through the political landscape.
“At this juncture, it is my pleasure to announce the ayes have it. The motion has passed, and the governor stands impeached by the County Assembly of Meru,”
proclaimed the bold and unwavering Meru County Assembly Speaker, Ayub Bundi.
This was no ordinary battle; it was a 10-hour marathon of political chess, initiated by Majority Leader Evans Mawira, aimed at toppling the governor for the second time.
The first attempt, a year prior, had failed, but this time the MCAs were unyielding.
The air was thick with allegations and accusations.
Governor Mwangaza, the target of the assembly’s ire, found herself battling against claims of misappropriation, misuse of county resources, and the alleged embezzlement of funds through her relatives, including sisters, a brother, and a nephew.
The MCAs asserted that she orchestrated withdrawals of county funds under the guise of legitimate payments for supplies provided by her own kin.
Nepotism, unethical practices, and employing her relatives were just the tip of the iceberg.
The governor was accused of jet-setting her family on overseas trips under the pretense of expertise, leaving a trail of disgruntled MCAs in her wake.
Accusations ranged from bullying and vilification of fellow leaders to illegal appointments and usurping statutory powers.
Contempt of court, naming public roads without following procedures, and a disregard for the Assembly added to the long list of grievances.
