Kenya Premier League: 2 horse Race Between Gor Mahia, Tusker For Title

Gor Mahia and Tusker’s fight to win the FKF Premier League title continued yesterday after both clubs picked vital wins as the 2022-2023 season enters the penultimate stage.

Gor came back from a goal down to edge out FC Talanta 2-1 as defending champions Tusker narrowly edged out KCB 1-0.

At the same time, Nzoia Sugar also completed a 3-2 comeback win to keep their hopes of winning the title alive.

At Kasarani Stadium, Benson Omalla scored a brace for Gor as the record Kenyan champions picked maximum points to maintain their two-point lead at the top of the log.

After the brace, Omalla now equals former Kariobangi Sharks striker Eric Kapaito’s feat of the 2021 season’
Kapaito won the Golden Boot award with 25 goals and Omalla is now on course to surpass that record.

With seven matches left, all eyes will be on the Kisumu Day High School alumni if he will become the first Kenyan to hit the 30-goal mark in a season, a feat never achieved before. Gor leads the standings with 59 points, two points ahead of Tusker.

The brewers maintained the pressure on the league leaders after former KCB hitman Michael Oduor scored the solitary goal in Tusker’s narrow 1-0 win over the bankers.

Robert Matano’s charges had last weekend surrendered their one-point lead after going down to third-placed Nzoia Sugar 1-0 at their Sudi Stadium fortress. Nzoia has not lost at their home ground this season.

At Kasarani Annex yesterday, the sugar men staged a second-half comeback as they saw off Posta Rangers 3-2 in the stadium that hosted a doubleheader.

In an earlier match at the venue, Nairobi City Stars played out to a 0-0 draw against Kakamega Homeboyz. Despite the draw, City Stars moved five points off the relegation zone.

Ulinzi Stars on the other hand hammered bottom-placed Vihiga Bullets 3-1 as Kenya Police hammered Bandari 3-0 in their own backyard in Mombasa. Clifton Miheso, Elvis Rupia, and Clinton Kinanga all scored in the win as the law enforcers remained fifth on 46 points.

On Tuesday, Mathare United’s relegation woes continued after a 2-1 defeat to Kariobangi Sharks in the Slum Derby.
The defeat left the Slum Boys 16th with 22 points. Sofapaka on the other hand lost 3-2 to Wazito.
