All tickets for travel on the Madaraka Express Passenger Service trains are collected at the nearest Madaraka Express Passenger Service station,”

In a recent statement, Kenya Railways (KR) has raised alarm over fraudulent activities involving fake agents selling Madaraka Express Passenger Service tickets at inflated prices.

The organization cautions the public against falling victim to these scams and emphasizes the only legitimate channels for purchasing tickets: online through the KRC platform, via the *639# USSD payment solution, or in person at the nearest station.

KR underscores that tickets are issued in the passenger’s name and cannot be transferred, stressing the importance of matching identification details with those on the ticket.

The warning extends to not accepting tickets from strangers and highlights the use of official ticket printing machines or uniformed Passenger Service Assistants at station counters.

Furthermore, KR asserts that it has not appointed any third parties to sell tickets on its behalf, urging the public to only engage with authorized means of purchase.

The cautionary announcement comes just ahead of the implementation of new fare rates, slated to take effect from January 1, 2024.

KR had previously announced a 50% fare increase across all routes, citing rising operational costs due to increased fuel prices in the energy and petroleum sector.

Effective January 1, 2024, passengers traveling to Mombasa will experience a fare hike from Sh1,000 to Sh1,500, while first-class travelers will see an increase from Sh3,000 to Sh4,500.

The fare adjustments are applicable to various routes, with passengers urged to take note of the changes, which were implemented as of November 1, 2023, for advance ticket purchases.

KR’s decision to revise fares is explained as a response to significant increases in fuel prices, impacting operational costs across services such as Madaraka Express Passenger Service, Madaraka Express Commuter Service, Nairobi Commuter Railway Service, Kisumu Safari Train, and Nanyuki Safari Train.

Passengers are encouraged to stay informed and utilize only the official ticketing channels to avoid falling victim to ticket scams amidst the impending fare adjustments.
