Kenyan university student leaders have unanimously disclosed their plan to hold protests in different camapases around the country on Friday.

The protests are against the high cost of living that the country is facing.

During a Azimio la Umoja meeting that included the party leaders, the students acknowledged the efforts that the opposition team had been playing in the fight against high cost of living and they went on ahead to invite Raila Odinga to join them during tomorrows demonstrations.

The student leaders also included their motive to stage protests against the existing university funding model which they jointly disagreed.

President William Ruto unveiled the new funding model on 3rd May 2023, students from the vulnerable and extremely needy households will receive 100% funding while the needy and less needy will get 93% government funding and a paltry 7% contribution from their households to cover for the tuition fees.

It consisted of Higher Education Financing (HEF) Portal, which will provide funds directly to students.

The students insisted a review of the model should be done and also added that the government should instead retain the Higher Education Loans Board (HELP).

Opposition leader commented on the high cost of living accusing the government of failing to take his advice of running the country.

“We have been telling these people severally, you are what is seems to be a hole, don’t continue to dig it. You witnessed how our MPs fought very hard on the tax bill because rising the tax bills will not solve anything,” Raila explained.

However, Raila deviated from responding to the planed demos ahead of tomorrow.

Some of the Azimio leaders present were Embakasi East Member of Parliament, Babu Owino who explained his gravest disappointment concerning the new funding model which he termed as unfavourable and discriminating.

Babu supported the move to hold demonstrations tomorrow urging the students to hold the demonstrations outside the campuses simultaneously.

“Let the demonstrations be done just outside the gate of all the universities simultaneously, then you repeat the same within a month. You will get the results you need,” he added.

Other issues raised by the student leaders were delayed capitation, and insecurity in schools.
