His Majesty King Charles 111 and his wife Queen Camilla are set to embark on a royal tour of Kenya from Tuesday, October 31st to Friday, November 3rd, 2023.

This visit, at the invitation of President Ruto, marks a unique milestone as it will be the King’s first visit to a Commonwealth nation and aligns with Kenya’s celebration of 60 years of independence.

The royal visit underscores the warm and enduring relationship between the United Kingdom and Kenya, emphasizing the strong partnership they continue to forge.

The royal couple’s itinerary includes stops in Nairobi City County, Mombasa County, and surrounding areas, where they will engage in a wide range of activities aimed at reflecting the collaborative efforts between the two nations.

The visit holds a special historical significance as it is the country where Queen Elizabeth II’s reign began in February 1952, making it a symbolic location for His Majesty’s first visit to a Commonwealth nation as King.

During their stay, King Charles and Queen Camilla will meet with President Ruto, the First Lady, members of the Kenyan Government, UN staff, CEOs, faith leaders, and young people, among others. The royal couple will also join Kenyan Marines training with UK Royal Marines and attend an event dedicated to the late Nobel Laureate, Professor Wangari Maathai, alongside her daughter, Wanjira Mathai.

The visit’s agenda is diverse and embraces the close links between the British and Kenyan people in areas such as the creative arts, technology, enterprise, education, and innovation. It also acknowledges the complex historical aspects of the UK and Kenya’s shared history, including the Emergency period from 1952 to 1960. His Majesty will take the opportunity to deepen his understanding of the hardships endured by the people of Kenya during this time, as the royal couple tours a new museum dedicated to Kenya’s history and pays respects at the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior at Uhuru Gardens, as well as visiting the site of Kenya’s declaration of independence in 1963.

Furthermore, the royal program includes a ceremonial welcome at State House, bilateral meetings with President Ruto and the First Lady, and a State Banquet hosted by the President according to the official website of the UK government. The website has further revealed that  his Majesty will visit the United Nations Office at Nairobi to learn about UN Habitat and the UN Environment Programme’s work, and he will also attend a technology showcase highlighting Kenya’s thriving tech sector, known for its startup ecosystem.

Additionally, the King and Queen will participate in events focusing on Kenya’s young people, engage in acts of Remembrance at a Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery, visit Nairobi National Park to witness conservation efforts by the Kenya Wildlife Service, and support equine welfare initiatives. The visit will conclude with a visit to Mtongwe Naval Base in Mombasa, where Kenyan Marines trained by the Royal Marines will demonstrate defense collaboration in action.

The Queen’s program will involve meeting survivors of sexual and gender-based violence, while the King will meet faith leaders working to promote harmony within Mombasa’s diverse community. This royal visit is poised to deepen the bonds between the United Kingdom and Kenya, celebrating their partnership and shared history, while also addressing contemporary global challenges.
