Kirinyaga Woman Representative Njeri Maina has come out to defend the Kenya Kwanza government over the alleged tribal appointments in the public sector.

Kirinyaga Woman Representative Njeri Maina

Maina who spoke on Citizen TV’s DayBreak Show said the President William Ruto-led administration was only rewarding its loyalists in the 2022 August General Election.

She dismissed claims of nepotism and tribalism in the appointments arguing that the government was concerned with delivering on its campaign promises through the leadership it deemed fit.

“I believe we have to be factual when it comes to political appointments. What is crucial is that are these men and women, the people who are qualified. Do they have the credentials? Are they the people the president and his deputy believe will be able to deliver on his agenda?” Maina posed.

“At the end of the day, I know the deputy president has spoken to the eye of many Kenyans on shareholding on government… Politics operates on investments and loyalty, so these are the people the president and his deputy will be able to fuel and run his agenda and deliver to the Kenyan people as per his promises.”

Citing the past utterances by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua that the government is like a company with shareholders, the MP defended the remarks intimating that the DP only alluded to state appointments and not to development.

According to the lawmaker, Kenyans should shift their attention to the development record of the regime and underlook the leadership running the country.

“DP Rigathi Gachagua did not speak on development, when we pay tax to the government, we expect that it delivers on the services…he has been clear that it will be done equally across the nations. What he spoke about was government appointments. It is a fact that even in developed nations, people appoint people they believe can deliver on their agenda,” she said.

“At the end of the day it’s a matter of whether the government will deliver for someone in Kisumu, for mama mboga in Kirinyaga…sometimes I think we really focus on the nitty-gritty; these representative appointments. At the end of the day what really matters is the service delivery.”
