Leicester City has confirmed the appointment of Dean Smith to lead the team until the end of the season. The main target for Smith at Leicester is to avoid relegation from the premier league.
The appointment came after former Leeds head coach Jesse March walked from negotiations with Leicester Chiefs claiming he does not want to be involved in a Championship battle. Leicester City is currently placed 19th two points behind 17th place Nottingham Forest.
It has been a challenging season for the 2016 Premier League winners and many did not expect them to be in that position at this time of the year. Leicester Chiefs axed Brendan Rogers on the fear that he was not performing and that move has since been termed as a panic move seeing they did not have anyone with a better resume to take over.
However, the appointment of Dean Smith might add some needed energy to the team seeing that he has been in that kind of situation before with Norwich City who were relegated last season. Smith was fired by Norwich in December for lack of better results to keep up with the rest of the league.
He has also worked with Aston Villa in a similar position and will be joined by former Chelsea defender John Terry who he was with at Villa Park.
“I’m really happy to have the opportunity to lead the team during these final weeks of the season. The challenge in front of us is clear, but it’s one myself and my coaching team have experienced before and, with the quality in the squad and the number of games remaining, it’s very much achievable.”Said Smith during his unveiling.
Leicester however has a hard task ahead in the coming weeks and will take on their relegation rivals in four of the eight remaining matches. Smith will travel to Leads as well as face Wolves
