Former Mungiki leader, Maina Njenga makes a U-turn in expressing willingness to meet Rigathi Gachagua in unprecedented move emphasizing that discussions on issues concerning the Mt Kenya region are crucial.
Speaking during a press conference at his residence in Rongai, Kajiado county, on Monday, Njenga stated that he had no differences will Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Additionally, Njenga advocated for the release of over 200 youths who were arrested in Nyeri town.
The arrests occurred after the cancellation of his thanksgiving meeting at Kabiru-Ini grounds in Nyeri on December 31, which was obstructed by a significant deployment of security agencies.
Addressing the media, Njenga clarified that he harbors no differences with Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and asserted that the disrupted meeting had been silently called off.
According to Njenga, the arrested youths had merely gathered to observe the event.
The security presence included roadblocks and inspections of vehicles leading to the Kibiru-ini ground on Sunday.
Those suspected of heading to the venue were detained, and their vehicles were towed to Nyeri Central Police Station. They are scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday.
Despite the setback, Njenga expressed his willingness to meet Deputy President Gachagua, emphasizing that discussions on issues concerning the Mt Kenya region are crucial.
He disclosed a meeting with elders from the region on Sunday, where it was collectively decided to call off the event, prompting plans for a future meeting involving various stakeholders.
Njenga condemned the labeling of the arrested youths as Mungiki, stating that it was inaccurate and fueled by political motives.
He regretted that leaders had used such labels to gain electoral advantages and affirmed that a new meeting would be organized to address pertinent issues with input from diverse stakeholders.
