In a devastating incident on Saturday morning, a 39-year-old man lost his life in Hawaii after a shark encounter off the coast of Maui.

Authorities responded to the scene at a beach area off the Hana Highway in Paia around 11:19 a.m. local time.

Police utilized a jet ski to bring the injured man to shore, where first responders initiated life-saving measures.

Despite their efforts, the victim succumbed to his injuries after being transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center, as confirmed by Maui police.

The identity of the deceased is being withheld for 24 hours, allowing his family time to inform extended relatives and friends.

Researchers from Hawaii’s Division of Aquatic Resources have observed an increased likelihood of shark encounters in the region from October through December.

While shark attacks are generally rare, experts emphasize that fatal incidents are even scarcer, with an average of five unprovoked fatalities annually worldwide.

The International Shark Attack File highlights that the odds of a fatal shark attack are less than 1 in 4 million. Mistaken identity is often cited as a leading cause of shark bites, especially in waters with limited visibility.

This tragic event marks the first fatal shark encounter in Hawaii since December 8, 2022, when a snorkeler lost their life off the shores of Maui. The incident serves as a somber reminder of the importance of public awareness and safety measures in coastal areas prone to such occurrences.
