In a recent turn of events, popular Kenyan comedian Eric Omondi has come under fire from fellow artists Nadia Mukami and Khaligraph Jones for his inconsistent behavior and alleged demeaning of the Kenyan music industry.
The controversy began when Omondi made a statement on social media regarding an upcoming music video release, shortly after playing out a serious activism gimmick, which drew strong reactions from the music community.
Omondi’s original post read, “This Friday at 10am we will show the INDUSTRY what a 3.8 Million Video looks like. We have done a Song with @iam_amberay just to show the Industry how it’s done #POSIS.” The announcement sparked mixed reactions, with some praising Omondi’s ambition while others found his tone and choice of words to be demeaning towards other Kenyan musicians.
Khaligraph Jones, took to social media to express his disappointment in Omondi’s behavior.
Jones commented, “You need to pick one fight, bro, so that we can take you seriously. Yesterday, you were spearheading a very important agenda, which made me go to the studio and record a song addressing the same matter. For once, I was on the same page as you. But today, you’re back to clout chasing? And tomorrow, you’ll start addressing the president like a comedian? This is how content creators end up being taxed. Grow up.”
Nadia Mukami, also voiced her concerns over Omondi’s flip-flopping statements. She wrote, “Eric, you had a clear vision, and your statements made sense! But you keep changing your tune every single day! We cannot take you seriously! Yesterday, I was in a discussion defending you, thinking that finally, Eric has chosen a direction! But today, I come here and see this nonsense! As OG [Khaligraph Jones] said, you’re making us not be taken seriously as an industry! This clout chasing is not helping our industry in any way! Pick a side! NKT.”
The criticism from Mukami and Jones has ignited a larger conversation within the Kenyan music industry, with many artists expressing their support for their fellow musicians.
The artists are urging Omondi to show consistency in his actions and to choose whether he is an artist or activist. And also to be mindful of how his words and behavior which can greatly can impact the entire industry.
It remains to be seen how Eric Omondi will respond to the backlash from his peers and whether he will address the concerns raised regarding his statements and actions.
