In exercise of the powers conferred by section 4B (3) of the Public Roads Toll Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport approves the toll rates for the Nairobi Express Way as set out in the Schedule,”

In a recent development, the government has implemented a significant hike in toll charges for the Nairobi Expressway.

Effective immediately, the new toll rates, ranging from Ksh.170 to Ksh.500, were announced by Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen in a gazette notice dated December 31, 2023.

The surge in fees, previously fluctuating between Ksh.100 to Ksh.310, applies uniformly across all stations along the Mlolongo-Westlands route.

The decision, attributed to global dollar variation rates, is detailed in the notice, exercising powers conferred by section 4B (3) of the Public Roads Toll Act.

CS Murkomen emphasized that the Base Toll Rates could be subject to adjustments based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and Exchange Rate on and after the Commercial Operation Date.

Motorists traversing the Expressway from Mlolongo and exiting at various points will experience varying increases. For instance, those exiting at the SGR station and the Eastern Bypass will now pay Ksh.250, up from Ksh.100, while the Southern Bypass exit fee has surged to Ksh.330 from Ksh.210.

Notably, Capital Hill and Haile Selassie station exits will now cost Ksh.410, up from Ksh.210, and exits at Museum Hill, The Mall, and Nairobi Westlands Terminus will command a fee of Ksh.500, increased from Ksh.310.

Similar toll rates will be enforced for motorists traveling in the opposite direction, from the Nairobi Westlands entry terminus to the Mlolongo exit terminus.

Shorter routes, including Syokimau to the SGR station and those from SGR and the JKIA stations to the Eastern Bypass, will now cost motorists Ksh.170, up from Ksh.100, with the same adjustments applying to the reverse routes. This move has sparked discussions regarding the impact on commuters and the broader transportation landscape.
