Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has responded to Kenyans on Twitter, or KOT, who accused him of plagiarizing an image of a cow and three calves from the internet and claiming they were from President William Ruto’s farm.
The images, which he posted on Tuesday, were quickly flagged by the Media Observer-iV Network of Fact-Checking Desks, which pointed out that they were stolen from another social media page.
Hundreds of users flooded the post’s comment section, chastising the legislator for his gaffe.
Later Tuesday evening, the Senator succumbed to the pressure and defended himself claiming that Kenyans on Twitter appeared to have misunderstood his post which he claimed had used ‘figurative language’.
He went on to say that the same energy KOT used to expose his ruse, if directed in the right direction, would benefit the country.
“If KOT were hardworking, the way they have googled the cow and calf picture, then we would be the first world economy!” he wrote on Twitter.
Cherargei is the second leader to be exposed for spreading misinformation on social media.
Earlier, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja was chastised for claiming credit for a three-year-old image of a clean street in Nairobi’s CBD.
