Over 100 people were evacuated from controversial Pastor Ezekiel Odero’s New Life Prayer Centre and Church at Mavueni, Kilifi County, during his arrest on Thursday, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki said.
Odero was arrested om Thursday morning in Mombasa, just a day after he was questioned about alleged links to Paul Mackenzie Nthenge, the leader of a starvation cult that has led to the deaths of at least 98 people in Shakahola, Kilifi County.
CS kindiki through a tweet on Thursday afternoon said the televangelist was being processed to face criminal charges related to the mass killing of his followers.
”The said Church has been shut down. The over 100 people who were holed up at the premises have been evacuated and will be required to record statements,” he wrote.
Odero’s arrest came amid allegations of deaths that have been occurring at his premises and reported to various morgues or institutions in the region.
Citizen Digital understands that the preacher is currently at the regional police headquarters in Mombasa where he is being interrogated.
Detectives on Wednesday also grilled the management of a mortuary located near the preacher’s church.
As of Wednesday evening, ninety-eight people had been confirmed dead in the incident where Nthenge, who leads the Good News International Church, is said to have instructed members to starve themselves in order to “meet Jesus”.
Detectives and pathologists have been combing through the Shakahola Forest since Friday for more shallow graves and any of Nthenge’s followers who might be hiding.
Over 360 people have been reported missing.
