President William Ruto has met with parliamentary leadership from both the Senate and the National Assembly.

This came hours after Raila Odinga called off his Monday and Thursday demonstrations, to allow the president to act on the opposition’s grievances.

According to a Tweet on President Ruto’s official Twitter page, the meeting aimed to hold talks to plan the bipartisan approach to issues raised by the opposition leader Raila Odinga.

We have asked the Parliamentary leadership of both Houses to consider our proposal for a bipartisan approach to addressing the matters raised by the Opposition as a priority,” Ruto’s tweet reads in part.

We are convinced the issues shall be conclusively handled by Parliament in order to allow us to focus on our economic transformation programme.” He adds.

The meeting was held at State House this morning, and attended by leaders of Parliament led by the National Assembly Leader of Majority Kimani Ichung’wa and his Senate counterpart Nandi Senator Aaron Cheruiyot.

On Sunday, April 2 evening, President Ruto asked Raila to call off the weekly protests that are being held every Monday and Thursday.

“In these circumstances, and in view of the recent events that led to the loss of lives and destruction of property I urge Hon. Raila Odinga to call off any further demonstrations,” said Ruto.

In his address to the nation, he regretted the loss of lives, injuries and the destruction of property witnessed during the demonstrations in the past two weeks.

He added that his administration was open to honest, objective and sincere deliberations based on the rule of law and the constitution. He was also open to reviewing laws on selecting the next Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) commissioners.
