In a bold address at Bukhungu Stadium, Kakamega County, Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition party leader Raila Odinga has urged President William Ruto to alleviate the economic hardships faced by Kenyans.
Odinga’s call for action comes in response to President Ruto’s New Year’s message.
Highlighting the tumultuous year marked by economic challenges, Odinga urged the Kenya Kwanza administration to curtail executive spending and wastage as a New Year’s gift to the citizens.
He specifically called for a reduction in taxation to bring down the soaring costs of essential commodities like groceries and fuel.
Odinga proposed a series of measures, including potential mass action, to pressurize the government into reconsidering its taxing policies.
He emphasized the need for the government to address the concerns of Kenyans and put an end to what he labeled as a punitive taxation regime.
“We want to see the year 2024 better than 2023. We want taxes to decrease, and the cost of living to go down,” stated Mr. Odinga.
Pledging to initiate a comprehensive anti-tax campaign, Odinga expressed the opposition’s commitment to advocating for budget cuts that would allow citizens to retain more of their earnings.
He warned of the possibility of resuming anti-government street protests if the Kenya Kwanza government fails to remove the contentious Finance Act, 2023.
In addition to his fiscal concerns, Odinga took the opportunity to call for reforms in football management, criticizing the government for neglecting sports talents in the country. He specifically highlighted Kakamega as a hub of football talent that has been overlooked by the Ministry of Sports.
Accompanied by other opposition leaders during the finals of the Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa Cup, Odinga’s address encompassed a multifaceted call for change, touching on economic policies and the need for sports development in the country.
