Most residents have in the past blamed extensive sand harvesting and brick-making along Voi River for the floods.

In the aftermath of the devastating floods in Taita Taveta County, a team of international relief workers arrived to bolster the ongoing rescue efforts. The humanitarian aid coalition, comprising organizations from various countries, collaborated with local authorities and the Kenya Red Cross to provide essential supplies and medical assistance.

The displaced families in Mwarusa, Mata, Lesuyai, Rekeke, Kitobo, Wanganga, Gregan, and Tangini found a glimmer of hope as the relief teams distributed emergency shelter kits, food supplies, and hygiene essentials. The international aid workers worked tirelessly alongside the local community to evacuate vulnerable individuals to safer locations.

As the rescue operations expanded, helicopters equipped for aerial rescues joined the efforts. The swift response aimed not only to evacuate stranded residents but also to assess the damage caused to infrastructure and agriculture. A task force composed of engineers and agricultural experts collaborated to formulate a comprehensive recovery plan for the affected areas.

So far, four people have been killed and several others reported missing after the Voi River in Taita Taveta County burst its banks on Monday morning.

In a statement, Kenya Red Cross said rescue efforts are underway after the river broke its banks causing flood in villages within Voi Town.

Meanwhile, the Meteorological department continued to monitor weather patterns, providing real-time updates to guide the ongoing relief operations. Despite a slight reduction in rainfall intensity, isolated storms remained a concern, prompting the authorities to maintain a vigilant stance.

The collaboration between local, national, and international entities showcased the resilience of communities in the face of adversity. As the region gradually recuperated, the focus shifted to long-term strategies for flood prevention and sustainable development, with a commitment to building resilient communities that could withstand future environmental challenges.
