Four missing fishermen

Out of the four fishermen, only three are alive after one of them lost his life, presumably to drown

The missing Kilifi fishermen lost in the vastness of the Indian Ocean since November, are set to return home on Thursday at 9 am.

The Kenya Coast Guard Service (KCGS) confirmed the successful retrieval of the fishermen from a Chinese vessel that had rescued them at sea.

The rescue operation, executed by a KCGS vessel, concluded on Wednesday at 12:45 pm, marking the rendezvous with the foreign rescuers at 256 nautical miles from the Port of Mombasa.

KCGS Director General Bruno Shioso stated, “The vessel is enroute back to Mombasa with an expected arrival time of 0900hrs on 28 December 2023 (Thursday).”

However, amid the relief, Shioso revealed a somber note of the four fishermen, one lost his life, presumably to drown.

Expressing condolences, Shioso acknowledged the shared grief and extended heartfelt sympathies to the family and friends of the deceased fisherman.

The four fishermen had embarked on a Deep-Sea fishing expedition on November 30, and their absence was noticed when they failed to return as scheduled on December 2.

KCGS initiated a robust search and rescue mission upon receiving the missing persons report. Following confirmation of their discovery, a KCGS vessel was swiftly dispatched to recover the three surviving fishermen and reunite them with their families and friends.

Shioso credited the success of the mission to the close collaboration with partners and stakeholders, including the Kenya Defence Forces/Kenya Navy, National Police Service, County Government of Kilifi, and local Beach Management Units (BMUs).

He expressed gratitude to the sailors involved in the rescue and reassured the public that KCGS remains unwavering in its commitment to safeguarding lives at sea and ensuring the security of the maritime domain.
