A marriage proposal went awry in Gongoni, tana river county after a middle-aged woman swallowed a ring that was hidden in her plate of pilau by her boyfriend and her mother, in bid to wield a memorable engagement surprise.
The victim’s boyfriend Johanna Charo was anxious for the moment when his lover Jessica Hawayu would unearth the ring in her plate of pilau, and possibly break down in tears of joy, stunned by the unique method of proposal, when she immediately started choking and collapsed.
Charo who had positioned himself a distance away from where Jessica was sited, jumped quickly in a way similar to the one he had practiced to wield the moment his lover discovered the ring, but instead used it in a rather heartbreaking way to rescue her from the rings gag that had already started to strain her breathing.
Until then, the event which had some other close relatives in attendance was fairing on well, with the majority anticipating the thunderbolt, though romantic proposal.
According to Melanie, Jessica’s sister, their father who was the quickest to react to her choke by giving her blows on her back, had failed to approve the idea when they immediately went out of options and choose to settle on the one where she would stumble on the ring in her food.
“Dad had objected the idea but since there was no better idea, we decided to take a chance with the one we had and went on to wield it,” narrated Melanie.
“We did not anticipate that would happen, but dad feared it would. That was so close, it left mum crying,” said Oscar Habil, Jessica’s younger brother.
However even after waking up to find herself in hospital a few hours later, Jessica was wowed by the move by her boyfriend and mother to give her a surprise engagement and said the much awaited ‘yes’ agreeing to marry Charo.
Charo on his side said he had learnt his lesson given the simple mistake would have easily taken away his future wife’s life “I have learned a very hard lesson, that is how we would have killed my wife. The devil is a liar,” said Charo in a phone interview with the nation.
