We all thought we were in heaven, but we were in hell,” she says. “And in hell terrible things happen.”

In a shocking revelation, a two-year BBC investigation spanning three continents has uncovered a dark chapter in the life of TB Joshua, a charismatic Nigerian pastor leading one of the world’s largest evangelical churches.

Dozens of survivors have come forward, detailing allegations of sexual abuse and rape perpetrated by Joshua over nearly two decades.

The investigation unveils testimonies from more than 25 eyewitnesses and victims from various countries, including the UK, Nigeria, Ghana, US, South Africa, and Germany.

The survivors describe a nightmarish world inside Joshua’s compound, where sexual assaults, repeated rapes, and forced abortions were reported.

One victim, Rae, who spent 12 years in Joshua’s compound, speaks about the horrors she endured, emphasizing the need to expose the truth behind what she describes as a “horror story.”

The investigation, conducted in collaboration with Open Democracy, involved over 15 BBC journalists who gathered evidence, including archive video recordings, documents, and extensive interviews.

The Synagogue Church of All Nations, led by Joshua’s widow Evelyn and a new team, did not respond to the allegations but stated that previous claims were unfounded. Former followers who attempted to speak out about abuse claim they were silenced or discredited by the church.

TB Joshua, regarded as one of the most influential pastors in African history, passed away unexpectedly in June 2021. Despite the allegations, the church remains popular, with thousands attending services every week.

The investigation also sheds light on Joshua’s global influence, with politicians, celebrities, and sports figures, including Nelson Mandela’s daughter and Chelsea FC striker Didier Drogba, being associated with his church.

Joshua’s purported miracles, documented through video recordings, are now questioned, with former insiders alleging that many were staged, with participants paid or coerced into testifying about their healings.

As the revelations continue to unfold, the legacy of TB Joshua faces intense scrutiny, leaving many to grapple with the unsettling truth behind the charismatic pastor’s life and the lasting impact on those who fell victim to his alleged crimes.
