Nairobi Governor Sakaja has today issued a ban that no hawkers will be allowed to operate along the side walks and roads with the CBD.
Speaking during a meeting with Nairobi County Inspectorate Officers and CBD hawkers leadership at the Charter Hall, Sakaja stated that the decision was made to restore sanity in the city.
Sakaja proposed that the affected hawkers will be given priority to operate along the back lanes where they can also operate and earn a living.
“Starting tomorrow morning, nobody will be spared in the clearance and the law will be enforced fairly. There will be no hawking on the road that one we will not have. That is an irreducible minimum even for their own safety. From tomorrow morning even at Muthurwa and Bus station,” Sakaja stated.
He went further to dismiss those who had been accusing him of targeting the hawkers claiming that there needs to be a fair working space for the business owners in Nairobi country.
“We must be firm and a rule is a rule. When we say there is no hawking along Moi Avenue there is none for anyone. Everybody must get their piece we can’t favor one group over another. So when we insist that you operate up to some certain spot then stop there and nobody will bother you,” Sakaja explained.
Sakaja later on went ahead to instruct that all inspectorate officers, Kanjos will undergo refresher training sessions on how to handle people during operations.
