The Premier League top four and relegation battles continued to intensify on match day 31 with Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspurs losing vital points.
Third-placed Newcastle United traveled to Villa Park with an aim to go three points ahead of Manchester United while Tottenham Hotspurs were hopeful of catching up with Manchester United in the battle for fourth as they welcome Bournemouth at the Tottenham Stadium on Saturday evening.
Newcastle found their task harder than anticipated as a red-hot Ollie Watkins hit the upright just 30 seconds into the game. Aston Villa’s resurgence since the arrival of Unai Emery would continue against the Magpies as the host got their first goal courtesy of Jacob Ramsey after he connected to Watkins’s headed pass.
Aston Villas’s dominance would be paid off again in the 62nd minute when Watkins struck. The goal would be scrapped by the VAR but Ollie Watkins would return two minutes later to make it 2 nil. The visitors were dominated for most of the game and again Watkins would strike again in the 83rd minute to make it three. The win leaves Aston Villa 6th on the Premier League table three points behind 5th placed Tottenham Spurs in 5th place.
Newcastle is still third but a win for Manchester United tomorrow against 18th-placed Nottingham will mean they lose that place.
Tottenham on the other hand were unfortunate not to claim a point as their visitors would steal a last-minute winner. Tottenham went ahead earlier in the 14th minute but Matias Vina would equalize in the 38th minute to make sure the game went to halftime with both teams tied.
Dominick Solanke put Bournemouth ahead in the 51st minute and Tottenham had to wait till Anaut Danjuma came off the bench to score in the 88th minute.
The game was seemingly ending with the teams sharing the spoils but Dango Ouattara had other ideas and he proved just that by scoring in the fifth minute of added time to steal the win. Bournemouth is now up to 14th three points ahead of Westham who have 2 games in hand.
On other results, Chelsea’s poor form continued with a loss to Brighton. Wolves claimed a win over Brentford while Southampton Miseries continued in the hands of Cyrstal Palace.
