We decided for Maama to self-isolate in one of the houses at Rwakyitura while I continue with the programmes that we had arranged but not ones where Maama was involved,”

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni announced through his official account that his wife, First Lady Janet Museveni, has tested positive for COVID-19.

The revelation came after Janet began experiencing symptoms, described by the president as a “sandy feeling” in the throat, following a family lunch on Christmas day.

President Museveni initially conducted a Rapid Corona test, which yielded a negative result. Undeterred, the first couple opted for a more comprehensive PCR test, sending a sample to Mbarara. Unfortunately, the result came back positive, confirming Janet’s COVID-19 diagnosis.

Despite feeling weak, occasional headaches, and the described “sandy feeling,” President Museveni, who had previously battled COVID-19 himself, expressed surprise at remaining negative after sharing close quarters with his spouse. He mused about whether his survivor status played a role in this outcome.

Taking precautionary measures, the president disclosed that on December 26, he personally conducted another COVID-19 test, which returned negative results by the afternoon.

Consequently, the decision was made for the First Lady to self-isolate at Rwakyitura while the president continued with scheduled programs where her involvement wasn’t crucial.

The president cited this situation as the reason for their absence at an event in Kyenkwanzi, emphasizing the importance of adhering to health protocols.

The couple’s commitment to public safety remains evident as they navigate this unexpected chapter, urging citizens to remain vigilant in the face of the ongoing pandemic.

This development sheds light on the unpredictable nature of the virus, even within the highest echelons of political leadership, serving as a reminder that COVID-19 knows no boundaries.
