In a passionate address during the opening ceremony of the 27th Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth (CSPOC2024), Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni Lectured the West against manipulation days terming it as “evil imperialism.”
His remarks come just a week after the United States removed Uganda from the Africa Growth Opportunity Act (AGOA) trade pact.
President Museveni criticized the West for attempting to impose its agenda on foreign territories, warning of the global consequences of such actions. He urged nations to cease manipulations and lectures directed at societies different from their own.
Blaming “philosophical, ideological, and strategic shallowness” for the ongoing crisis in the Middle East, Museveni drew historical parallels, stating that the roots of the current situation can be traced back to Roman imperialism and the dispersion of the Jews.
“We are dealing with the mistakes of the Romans. What were they doing in the Middle East?” Museveni questioned, decrying both foreign and local actors who miscalculate and seek to monopolize knowledge to oppress others.
Despite his defiance towards Western pressure, Museveni called for the exploitation of the 2.4 billion population of Commonwealth nations to eradicate chauvinistic ideas.
He highlighted the positive aspects of interactions between colonizers and the colonized and urged focusing on mutual benefits.
“Let us concentrate on utilizing the progress of man in the struggle against the oppression of man by nature,” he emphasized, cautioning against using technological progress for parasitism.
Concluding his remarks, President Museveni underscored the importance of global powers respecting the sovereignty of other states. “If you try to use knowledge to oppress others, they will strive to acquire knowledge to catch up and defeat you,” he warned.
The CSPOC2024, running until January 6 in Uganda’s capital, provides a platform for Commonwealth nations to engage in discussions on pressing global issues.
